Did you know that more than 100 million Americans rent their homes?
That’s right – and choosing the best apartment can feel like a competitive sport when you know there are tons of other renters looking in the same area as you.
You want to snap up a good apartment as quickly as possible – without compromising on quality.
So, how do you know when an apartment is ‘the one’?
If you’re not careful, you could miss out on a place that’s perfect for you because you didn’t recognize the signs – that’s why we’ve listed them below.
1. It’s in a Neighborhood You Like
Is the apartment in your dream neighborhood, close to where you work, or near to tons of great amenities?
If the answer is yes, then there’s a good chance it’s the one.
On the other hand, if the apartment is an area that has high crime, poor local facilities, or otherwise makes you feel uneasy, it’s definitely time to pass.
Location is something you can’t change, so don’t ignore your gut feeling.
2. It Has All the Amenities You Need
Make a list of all the amenities you’d have in your ideal apartment and make sure you can tick most of them off before you commit to a place.
Is there an onsite laundry room? A residents’ gym?
Is there a parking space for your car, or will you have to find space on the road? What about public transport – will it be easy to get around without a car?
If an apartment seems to have every amenity you’ve ever wanted, it could well be the one for you.
3. The Mangement Team Are Helpful
The management team at your apartment building can make or break your experience there, so it’s a great sign when they’re friendly and helpful.
You should feel confident that the communal areas are well-maintained, that repairs will be taken care of swiftly, and that staff behaves in a professional and courteous manner.
If you fell in love with the management team on your first visit, bump the apartment up to the top of your list. If you see lots of unresolved issues and management aren’t helpful, run a mile.
4. It’s in Good Condition
We’ve all looked around apartments that seemed great on paper but then had issues like damp, mold and mildew, leaks, and broken appliances.
No matter how perfect an apartment looks on the surface, you should always make sure that the underlying condition is good. Check thoroughly for problems during your viewing, looking behind furniture to ensure nothing is hidden.
If an apartment is clean, well maintained, nicely decorated, and without any serious issues to be fixed, then you’re onto a winner.
How to Make Sure You Choose the Best Apartment
Choosing the best apartment means having a clear idea of what you’re looking for and then keeping that in mind as you view places.
Your perfect apartment should be in top condition, well-located, close to the right amenities, and looked after by an excellent management team.
